The turn of the 20th century was a transitional period in Russian history. By this time in his life, Chekov was suffering greatly from tuberculosis and traveled in search of a healthier climate, building a villa in Yalta and ultimately dying in Badenweiler, Germany, with his wife, Olga, at his side. By the late 1890s, however, his plays were being produced by the Moscow Arts Theatre and became both commercially and critically successful. Most of Chekov’s plays were written during the last 15 years of his life, although early productions were disastrous. When I tire of one, I go and sleep with the other." He also conducted thousands of interviews of convicts and settlers on Sakhalin Island, in Russia’s Far East, in 1890 these were published as The Island of Sahkalin, a powerful work calling for more humane treatment of convicts. He was quoted as saying, "Medicine is my lawful wife and literature is my mistress. ![]() Though he trained as a doctor, his primary occupation became short-story writing, for which he won the Pushkin Prize in 1887, while only in his 20s. After the family became impoverished, Anton both supported them and financed his own education by writing for periodicals. Chekov’s father was abusive and accumulated ruinous debts. Anton Chekov was one of six children born to a grocer and his wife. ![]()

5/13/2023 0 Comments A beautiful friendship david weber![]() ![]() While I'm pleased that this novel didn't suffer from the same problems, the second half was a bit more slow-paced than I think most young adults would tolerate. ![]() His later novels were very slow paced with most of the action happening "off screen," so I wasn't sure what to expect from this novel. I liked David Weber's early novels in his Honor Harrington series. An instant bond is created between the telepathic treecat and the remarkable young human-one that has them willing to risk their lives to save each other.Ī Beautiful Friendship is a young adult science fiction adventure novel. ![]() Climbs Quickly, a treecat with an craving for human celery, comes face-to-face with Stephanie after she sets out to discover who or what has been raiding the greenhouses for celery. The native population has been keeping a watch on the human newcomers to their planet. But it's also far more dangerous, and Stephanie’s explorations come to a halt when her busy parents ask her to promise not to explore without adult supervision. Sphinx is a virgin wilderness full of new species of every sort, just waiting to be discovered. until her parents relocated to the frontier planet of Sphinx in the far distant Star Kingdom of Manticore. The events in the book are more like Biblical parables than a plot unfolding, except that the lesson is not, "Thou Shalt" but "Why should I?" I wish I could read German well enough to understand the nuances of Nietzsche's original narrative. It was my first encounter with existential thought, a stinging critique of the very nature of values and belief. ![]() I was warned that Nietzsche was dangerous for young readers (like Machiavelli) because he went insane. Reading through Zarathustra as a teenager was a singularly powerful experience the work defies categorization or genre, time or place. Surveying political rhetoric and policy, popular literature and scientific theories over four hundred years, history professor Nancy Isenberg upends assumptions about Americas supposedly class-free society - where liberty and hard work were meant to ensure real social mobility.
